Sharpening Gear

Chisels and Hand Planes are some of my favourite tools to work with. But they are only a pleasure to use when they are sharp.

I am of the opinion that you should sharpen more often that you think and always before you need to. But really, who has the time and energy for that?

So the only solution is to set up a station somewhere that makes the job as easy as possible and as pleasant as possible. And never just sharpen one tool, if you are there and the gear is out you may as well hone a few extra edges just in case.

Below you will see what gear I use for my sharpening station. Its not the only method and in truth, learning to sharpen without a honing guide may well be the best method to go long term but for a beginner do whatever makes it the least frustrating and gives you confidence in your tools.

This is an expensive bit of kit that seems to divide its users. I love mine but I do wish that it was capable of doing thinner chisels without needing an extra attachment. But apart from that gripe, I am still happy.

If you are on a budget and let’s be honest, tools costs can add up, this will do a job. It’s not the one I started with as this is better. The wide wheel is more stable.

A really affordable entry set of diamond plates. 3 grits so you can work your way to super sharp. Mine have lasted my whole time doing this so far and I am very happy.

Take you edge from sharp to scary sharp with a strop. The finishing touch. Or just use it to fine tune during use.
